Yahoo To Create YouTube Competitor?

Back in December you may have heard people on YouTube ranting about having video’s on their channels flagged and restricted due to increasing copyright standards, naturally creating an uproar. Well looks like one company’s mistake is anothers opportunity.

As it stands right now according to Alexa, YouTube is the number 3 site in the entire world, falling behind Google and Facebook. But Yahoo CEO Marissa Meyer is throwing the gauntlet down and stepping up to the video service giant with the intention to create a YouTube competitor. Marissa Meyer used to work at Google so she’s no schlub by any means, she clearly knows what she’s up against.

Though not much is know right now Yahoo is trying to pull some of YouTube’s elite talent away by offering better economic incentives. As Yahoo prepares to go head-to-head with YouTube, this new would-be video service wouldn’t exactly open it’s flood gates to anyone looking to start a channel and start making money off of ad revenues. Looks like they want to lock in some exclusive content creators first, a-la the early years of Youtube and if the site takes off they’ll open it up to everyone.

Yahoo executives have told video-makers and owners that the company can offer them better economics than they’re getting on YouTube, either by improving ad revenue or by offering guaranteed ad rates for their videos, Recode’s report says. Yahoo has offered extensive marketing, even on its home page, as well as allowing video producers the ability to sell advertising along with Yahoo’s sales force.

The way I see is whether you were or weren’t affected by YouTube tightening it’s restrictions this is a good thing. More competition among giant cooperations the better it is for the end-users or consumers. I’m excited to see a company daring to compete in an industry that seems to be pretty much claimed by Google.

I hope Yahoo strikes a nerve with people and opens up more options for those like us, trying to make a name for ourselves and share our content with as many people who want it.

Here’s to competition! May the best service win!

Half-Life 3… Unofficially-Officially Confirmed?

Looks like the folks at GAMESCOM accidentally or intentionally announced Valves sequel to its flagship series Half-Life 3.

Weather or not this is a fluke is yet to be known. All is known is that the PDF is still live on the GAMESCOM website… unedited or altered in any way. Also, GAMESCON hasn’t responded to the many inquiries sent about the possible mishap. We’ll keep an eye out if that changes in the coming hours.

GhostBusters 3 Will Be Bill Murray-less

Who you gonna call? Well not Bill Murray that’s for sure. Afer months of patiently waiting and wondering if yes or no. Dan Aykroyd has finally confirmed that production will move forward on the long awaited Ghostbusters third sequel without everyone’s favorite ghost busting actor Bill Murray as Peter Venkman.

When the news hit that a new writer Etan Cohen had been hired to work on the script for Ghostbusters 3, fans got their hopes up that Bill Murray would reprise his role as Peter Venkman. The actor did recently tease that there was a slight possibility of his return, but it seems we can forget about that happening.

When asked if Bill Murray was finally on board, Aykroyd replied..

“No, I can tell you he won’t be involved. It’s sad but we’re passing it on to a new generation. Ghostbusters 3 can be a successful movie without Bill. My preference would be to have him involved but at this point he doesn’t seem to be coming and we have to move on. It’s time to make the third one.”

Disappointing for fans of Murray’s character Peter Venkman no doubt, but at least we know. But the real question is will they recast the role or kill the character off? We’ll find out soon enough for sure.

Jurassic Park 4 to be released in 2012

A fourth entry in the Jurassic Park franchise has been in various stages of development for quite some time now. While the prospect of the film moving forward seemed to dwindle as time went on, there have been some major developments on the Jurassic Park 4 front as of late.

During last year’s Comic-Con, Steven Spielberg announced that he already worked out the story for “Jurassic Park 4” and was hoping to make the film in two or three years. Then last month, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” writers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver were hired to write the script.

Steve got the chance to speak with producer Frank Marshall in anticipation of the release of The Bourne Legacy, and the producer talked a bit about Jurassic Park 4, revealing that they plan on having it in theaters within two years.

He went on to say that it’s definitely a sequel, and even though Spielberg won’t be directing, he’ll be heavily involved in the development. And the reason why Marshall and Spielberg are so interested in the fourth film, is because there’s an opportunity to take advantage of all the technological advancements that have been made in recent years.

“That’s what’s gonna be great about it, technology hass taken a leap now that we can really do some great things,” he said, adding that the dinosaurs won’t all be CGI because practical effects feel more realistic to audiences.

Finding Nemo 2 Announced!!

Andrew Stanton, the man behind the Toy Story series, Monsters, Inc., and Wall-E, has been selected by Disney and Pixar to direct the much-anticipated SEQUEL for his possibly best-known work, Finding Nemo!

According to industry insiders, despite the writer/director’s epic flop with his debut live-action feature, John Carter, Andrew was able to present the studio with a concept for the second installment that was EXTREMELY well-received – so much so, in fact, that if all goes well with this, he’ll get another shot at helming live-action!

Unfortunately, no word yet on what kinds of shenanigans our beloved clownfish and forgetful regal tang will get into, but Victoria Krouse has been hired to pen the screenplay, and the finished product is expected to drop in 2016!

Fans of the animation studio should also know that the studio is still going to produce original movies. After Brave, Pixar is hard at work on three new original projects which will hit screens in the coming years: The Good Dinosaur (directed by Bob Peterson and slated for May 30, 2014); untitled inside the mind project (from Up’s Pete Doctor, with a June 19, 2015release); and an untitled movie about Dia de los muertos (directed by Nemo co-director Lee Unkrich).

Comic-Con 2012: Marvel’s "Item 47" to screen at end of SDCC scavenger hunt

Marvel will be unveiling at Comic-Con the One-Shot short film titled “Item 47” that will be released officially with “The Avengers” when it hits stores on September 25th of this year on Blu-Ray and DVD.

It all began with the Thor and Captain America Blu-ray/DVDs, Marvel Studios had started releasing short films or One-Shots. The Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) shorts were cute, and interesting but nothing particularly groundbreaking. However, Marvel might be adding some more weight with their latest One-Shot, “Item 47”.

The short film will be available on the Blu-ray/DVD for The Avengers (which will stores on September 25th), but Marvel will show Item 47 at a special screening at Comic-Con. The title refers to an alien gun that falls into the hands of a hard-luck couple played by Lizzy Caplan (party down and Cloverfield) and Jesse Bradford (Swimfan and Flags of a Fathers) after the epic battle in The Avengers. Two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents (Maximiliano Hernández and Titus Welliver) are tasked with getting the gun and capturing the couple, who are going on a crime-spree with their new toy.
While the first two Marvel one-shots, “Something Funny Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer” and “The Consultant” both ran 4 minutes, “Item 47” will run 12 minutes.

In addition to the poster and announcement, Marvel also let fans in on another surprise this morning. Those attending Comic-Con will be offered the chance to download a special app “Avengers Second Screen” that will work as a scavenger hunt guide to clues, ultimately leading to a special showing of  “Item 47” the evening of Thursday, July 12th.

Kill Bill and the Curious Case of "The Whole Bloody Affair"

The Whole Bloody Affair  is the official name for the integral cut of Kill Bill, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006 and has yet to see a release on DVD/Bluray or Theatrically (unless you visited the New Beverly Cinema for the week of March 27 – April 2 back in 2011).

Quentin Tarantino originally wrote Kill Bill, his ode to Spaghetti Westerns and Shaw Bros Kung-fu films, to be one big movie but it was cut in two volumes when it turned out to be too long.

Those of you lucky enough to get your hands on a copy of the “Japanese” release of Kill Bill Vol. 1, bore witness to a fully colored “House of Blue Leaves” fight scene, bloodier anime sequence along with additional material that was cut from the North American release.

Back when Q.T. was working hard on Inglourious Basterds he said in an interview with Sci-FiWire, that he’ll be adding one more scene to the already, four-plus-hour cut of the film,

“I need to do one thing with it, though… I’m not going to monkey around with the movie itself, but we’ve actually done a whole new section for the anime as the last thing [we added]. I actually wrote a much longer script for the anime section during O-Ren’s revenge chapter. Remember the guy with the long hair that kills her father? It’s like, what happened to that dude? Well, I wrote it and it was the biggest, most elaborate thing I wrote-her taking him down.”

He went on to say that he was going to go right into “The Whole Bloody Affair” after Basterds…
Well, since then, Inglourious Basterds went on to blow the minds of countless audiences around the world and is now available on home-video, we now have the complete version of “GRINDHOUSE” on Blu-ray and just a few days ago photos of “Django Unchained“, Tarantino’s new film, were released to the public. So something tells me we wont be seeing The Whole Bloody Affair on store shelves anytime soon.

However, there has been a list of changes that were compiled from the few people that have been privileged to see official screenings of The Whole Bloody Affair, along with what Q.T. has said on the longer cut of the film.

Here it is…

  • No “klingon proverb” quote. Instead will be a dedication
  • Chapters will remain in order
  • House of Blue Leaves fight scene will be in color & cut differently
  • Gorier anime scenes
  • Completely new 7 minute anime scene added
  • Various other scenes slightly altered
  • Sofie Fatale loses more limbs
  • No “baby” cliffhanger ending from Vol.1
  • Music-accompanied intermission between the two parts
  • Volume 2 is not different

If you search Amazon you’ll find evidence of a possible bootleg that was sold which is crazy in my opinion. Another little known fact is that, just like the fan edits of Star Wars The Phantom Menace that hit the web back in 1999, there are people that took it upon themselves to splice together Vol.1 (Japanese version) and Vol.2 to created their own homemade “The Whole Bloody Affair”. I think that there’s enough proof that people really-REALLY want to own this, almost mythical cut of the film. I for one am one of those people.
