Deh-Shay! Deh-Shay! Bah-Sah-Rah! Bah-Sah-Rah!

The world famous composer, Hans Zimmer rises to the task of scoring the third and final Dark Knight film. Zimmer’s approach to the Dark Knight Rises has been called unusual by the film’s director. And if that’s any indication, this will be one hell of a soundtrack.

In an interview with MTV, Zimmer mentioned that he did go over the story arc of the film with Nolan and discussed the themes for many of the films returning and debuting characters. But insisting that he can’t say more than that. In the interview he goes on to say…

“The thing about Chris and myself is, what we try to do, is treat each one with the autonomy it deserves, to try and invent and reinvent, not just go over old ground,” he said. “I think that’s what was most exciting for people on ‘The Dark Knight.’ They knew we were doing the ‘Batman’ movie, but they had no idea it was going to be that kind of ‘Batman’ movie.”

In an other interview with Collider, while promoting Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Zimmer talked about coming up with an unorthodox idea to not only create a new sound for the 3rd film but to open the project up to the fans as well.

“Well, before I started on Sherlock, I had an idea for Dark Knight. I said to Chris [Nolan], “Would it be okay if I got the most outrageous orchestra together and tried this experimental thing?” It involved chanting and all sorts of stuff. And, if I decided that it was just complete rubbish, then we could just throw it away and nobody would ever mention that Hans went and spent all that money. So, I went off and spent weeks writing it. I recorded the piece, and Chris came by and said, “Well, you’ve done half the movie now.” I said, “Well, I don’t think that’s quite true.” But, I think I figured out my cornerstone to the thing. I’m hellishly ambitious on that. The chant became a very complicated thing because I wanted hundreds of thousands of voices, and it’s not so easy to get hundreds of thousands of voices. So, we Twittered and we posted on the internet, for people who wanted to be part of it. It seemed like an interesting thing. We’ve created this world, over these last two movies, and somehow I think the audience and the fans have been part of this world. We do keep them in mind. And I thought it would be something nice, if our audiences could actually be part of the making of the movie and be participants in this. So, we’ve got this website up, www.ujam.com, where you can go on and be part of it. It was fantastic. The first Tweet that went out just melted our server because we had tens of thousands of people a second, trying to get onto the site. You always want to create a sound that nobody has ever heard, but I think, this time, we might be doing that. As a musician, I think about what environment things are recorded in. Now, you have hundreds of thousands of voices, all recorded in their own individual environment. Up until now, that’s been impossible to do. There’s a lot of people doing a lot of editing, as well.”

When asked if he cared about online reviews and criticism, Hans said

“I read it. My character is flawed, and I read it and suffer terribly when people don’t like what I do, or misunderstand it, but I learn things from it. Every and any conversation you have about the thing that you’re most interested in – which in my case, happens to be the movies I’m working on – might not be a novel conversation, but somebody’s point of view does make me think about things. Other than the really bitter and twisted stuff, I think people, especially with The Dark Knight franchise, are very interested in us making a good movie, and they’re trying to cheer us on, and they’re trying to make suggestions that are actually helpful to us. So, I am very aware of what’s going on out there.”

Zimmer elaborated on the “chant” used for the big Bane reveal. He said

“It’s nice to have the whole world join in on a chant. My only problem is that they’re so well-behaved on the chanting right now. If anybody goes onto UJAM right now, I need a little bit more. If you want to be heard, get a little louder, get a little more aggressive. It’s not necessarily his through-line; it will be an aspect of it. Right now we’re all focusing on the chant because that’s all you guys are hearing. It’s a very small part of the score, but I think there is something wonderful about finding a way of having the people who really care for this movie be participants in this movie.”

Sony FS700 & BMD 2K Cinema Camera

Looks like the cameras indy filmmakers will be using are only getting better and cheaper by the year. What started with the Canon HDSLRs are now transitioning to full 2k and 4K feature rich digital film cameras by both industry titans and new comers. With these soon to be released tools, not only are we getting the filmic look that indy filmmakers want but are getting an incredible dynamic range for full color control along with the highest of resolutions used by big studio productions.

With the successor of the Sony NEX-FS100, the $8,000 FS700 will no doubt make some waves with such features as super slow motion full-1080p (i.e. 240fps), built-in ND filters, XLR input, 3G-SDI and Super35mm CMOS sensor capable of producing full 4k RAW footage via a future (software) upgrade.

The FS100 caught my attention probably not as much as it should have. But the FS700 is a head-turning, affordable beast of a camera. Now, the only thing that has me worried is… the quality of the 4K footage that it’s suppose to produce. I’m just a little confused as to why Sony didn’t just release it 4K out of the box, instead of 4K-ready. Just seems a little odd. There could very well be nothing to it. But still it’s questionable.

Here’s sample footage:

But Sony isn’t the only one shaking up the indy world. The company most famous for there coloring software, DaVinci Resolve are breaking new grounds with Black Magic Design‘s very first, 2K Cinema Camera. I was shocked at first when I heard the news… a software company making a camera? After grasping that concept I realized… holy crap… it’s 2.5K out of the box… for $3000!!!! My mind was blown, how is this possible? I was excited to say the least.
It’s possible because BMD CC is aiming at indy filmmakers who’s budget lay between a mid-level DSLR and say Canon’s 5D Mark III. The Cinema Camera sports a capacitive touch screen LCD for camera settings and “slate” metadata entry and records in 24, 25, 29.97 and 30 fps and features an odd sized sensor that sits between a Super16mm and a Micro 4/3 sensor, which automatically brings up questions of low-light performance. The crop factor of that sensor size will roughly be around 2.4, appose to most popular DSLRS which is 1.5. Something to take into consideration as far as your existing lenses are concerned.
When BMD was designing the CC they had workflow in mind, along with 13 stops of dynamic range, 12 bit RAW uncompressed, you can record directly to AppleProRes, AvidDNXHD or  Quicktime formats. The CC completely uses open standards. Thunderbolt connection for live scopes (and charging), removable 2.5″ SATA SSDs (Solid State Disc) for on-board recording, 1/4″ inch microphone inputs, compatible with ZF and EF glass, BNC 3 Gb/s SDI out,   and… DaVinici Resolve 9 software thrown on top. So it’s a $3000 dollar camera with $1,500 worth of free software.
Here’s some sample footage:

Ultimately every Filmmakers need is different. And if the FS700 holds true, it will be perfect for me because of the possiblilities it will give me with special f/x. Also, I just like having more options on hand, I’m one of those guys who over compensates :). I will hold out for the Sony FS700. But without a doubt BMDs Cinema Camera looks to be an amazing tool, certainly for any curious would-be filmmakers out there. I’m all for variety and these cameras exhibit exactly that.

So it’s Officially Happening, ‘Avengers 2’ is in Production!

So this is one of those things we all knew was going to happen, but we are going to write about it anyways. Disney has officially announced on Tuesday that The Avengers 2 is in production!

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the news at the beginning of a conference call with reporters, describing the success of the first film as “a great illustration of why we like Marvel so much.

Over the weekend, The Avengers broke box-office weekend records with a whooping $207 million opening, earning the second-highest single day gross of all time (after “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 2”). And that is also not including that the film has accumulated over $500 million overseas alone, bringing the grand total to about nearly $744 million. The Avengers is currently estimated to reach $1 billion by this Sunday! So yea, I believe that means there will be a sequel.

There has even been some good ol’ fashioned fan rivalry going on over the success of The Avengers and how it will do against the upcoming Batman movie ‘The Dark Knight Rises‘. The Avengers has already taken the title from the Dark Knight for being one of the fastest movies to reach 250 million opening weekend. So Batman, you have some big shoes to fill.

So far all of the original cast of The Avengers are planning to return for the sequel and even director Joss Whedon has been given a option to return to direct the film if he wants. But just in case you can’t wait that long for the return of the Avengers, Disney has already put more coal in the fire to keep your Marvel excitement nice and warm. Iron Man 3 is scheduled to hit summer of 2013 and Thor 2 will follow in the fall, and Captain America 2 is scheduled to hit theaters April 4th of 2014.

Hatfields & McCoys a History Channel Original Series

Beginning on Memorial Day, the History Channel will debut the original series Hatfields & McCoys, a three-parter starring Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton.

The 3 part mini-series will be about the Legendary Feud between the Hatfields and the McCoys which took place from 1882-1888 in the West VirginiaKentucky back country along the Tug Fork, off the Big Sandy River. The Hatfields of West Virginia were led by William Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield (Kevin Costner) while the McCoys of Kentucky were under the leadership of Randolph “Ole Ran’l” McCoy (Bill Paxton). The feud has entered the American folklore lexicon as a metaphor for any bitterly feuding rival parties. More than a century later, the story of the feud has become a modern metaphor for the perils of family honor, justice and vengeance. Tom Berenger, Powers Boothe, and Jena Malone also star respectfully.

On June 14, 2003, the McCoy cousins partnered with Reo Hatfield of Waynesboro, Virginia to author an official truce between the families. The idea was symbolic: to show that Americans could bury their differences and unite in times of crisis, most notably following the September 11 attacks.

The miniseries will begin airing on Memorial Day, May 28, 2012, on the History Channel.

Kill Bill and the Curious Case of "The Whole Bloody Affair"

The Whole Bloody Affair  is the official name for the integral cut of Kill Bill, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2006 and has yet to see a release on DVD/Bluray or Theatrically (unless you visited the New Beverly Cinema for the week of March 27 – April 2 back in 2011).

Quentin Tarantino originally wrote Kill Bill, his ode to Spaghetti Westerns and Shaw Bros Kung-fu films, to be one big movie but it was cut in two volumes when it turned out to be too long.

Those of you lucky enough to get your hands on a copy of the “Japanese” release of Kill Bill Vol. 1, bore witness to a fully colored “House of Blue Leaves” fight scene, bloodier anime sequence along with additional material that was cut from the North American release.

Back when Q.T. was working hard on Inglourious Basterds he said in an interview with Sci-FiWire, that he’ll be adding one more scene to the already, four-plus-hour cut of the film,

“I need to do one thing with it, though… I’m not going to monkey around with the movie itself, but we’ve actually done a whole new section for the anime as the last thing [we added]. I actually wrote a much longer script for the anime section during O-Ren’s revenge chapter. Remember the guy with the long hair that kills her father? It’s like, what happened to that dude? Well, I wrote it and it was the biggest, most elaborate thing I wrote-her taking him down.”

He went on to say that he was going to go right into “The Whole Bloody Affair” after Basterds…
Well, since then, Inglourious Basterds went on to blow the minds of countless audiences around the world and is now available on home-video, we now have the complete version of “GRINDHOUSE” on Blu-ray and just a few days ago photos of “Django Unchained“, Tarantino’s new film, were released to the public. So something tells me we wont be seeing The Whole Bloody Affair on store shelves anytime soon.

However, there has been a list of changes that were compiled from the few people that have been privileged to see official screenings of The Whole Bloody Affair, along with what Q.T. has said on the longer cut of the film.

Here it is…

  • No “klingon proverb” quote. Instead will be a dedication
  • Chapters will remain in order
  • House of Blue Leaves fight scene will be in color & cut differently
  • Gorier anime scenes
  • Completely new 7 minute anime scene added
  • Various other scenes slightly altered
  • Sofie Fatale loses more limbs
  • No “baby” cliffhanger ending from Vol.1
  • Music-accompanied intermission between the two parts
  • Volume 2 is not different

If you search Amazon you’ll find evidence of a possible bootleg that was sold which is crazy in my opinion. Another little known fact is that, just like the fan edits of Star Wars The Phantom Menace that hit the web back in 1999, there are people that took it upon themselves to splice together Vol.1 (Japanese version) and Vol.2 to created their own homemade “The Whole Bloody Affair”. I think that there’s enough proof that people really-REALLY want to own this, almost mythical cut of the film. I for one am one of those people.

Do Black Widow or Hawkeye deserve their own Movie?

Now that “The Avengers” has hit US theaters, the question comes to light. Do you think “Black Widow” or “Hawkeye” deserve their own Stand Alone Film or maybe a “Black Widow and Hawkeye” Team-Up Flick.
Either way I wouldn’t mind watching it given that Scarlett Johansson who also I may add received a star on the “Walk of Fame” gave an Amazing performance playing the former Soviet Spy turn S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. And Major Kudos goes to Jeremy Renner who played the Master Archer and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent “Hawkeye”. In an interview with the “Washington Post”to having her stand alone film Scarlett Johansson replied: “I love her origin story. I think it’s just such a riveting one,” she said. “It’s just steeped in history and the richness to shoot in Russia, perhaps… I hope that the fans’ voice is loud enough and they want to see a Widow origin story, I know Marvel would be happy to entertain that. We’ve spoken a lot about it.”
“You see a little bit about how Natasha joined and it’s not that she’s fighting for the greater good of humanity,” the actress said. “She was almost salvaged by S.H.I.E.L.D. and so she’s loyal to that group, to that agency, but only as sort of paid debt.”
With that said, tell us what you think in the COMMENTS below on whether Black Widow or Hawkeye deserve their movie or better yet “Team Up’ movie.
To Help understand more about these two highly trained and deadly agents. I included a small bio about each character below:
Black Widow:
Born circa 1928, Natalia “Natasha” Romanova was apparently orphaned as a child when she was trapped in a burning building during an early attack on Stalingrad by enemy forces. Ivan Petrovitch Bezukhov, a Soviet soldier, found Natasha in the inferno and rescued her. Although Ivan kept a close eye on Natasha as she grew, by the late 1930s she had attracted the attention of Soviet intelligence, which began her training. In 1941, she was almost brainwashed into serving the ninja clan the Hand, but was saved by Ivan, Logan (James Howlett, later Wolverine) and Captain America. Following World War II, Natasha was recruited to become part of the Black Widow Program, a team of elite female sleeper agents. Among the Widow’s instructors was the Winter Soldier, formerly Captain America’s sidekick Bucky (James Barnes); Natasha studied as a ballerina to cover for her true occupation. The Soviet state eventually arranged for Natasha to marry Alexi Shostakov, a champion test pilot. After a few years of a happy marriage, the KGB faked Shostakov’s death in a rocket test; grief for Shostakov drove Natasha’s resolve deeper and she continued her education with the Red Room Academy, finally being appointed the title of the Black Widow.

After Russian scientist Anton Vanko left Russia to work with Iron Man (Tony Stark), Natasha’s superiors sent her and another operative, Boris Turgenov, to assassinate both men. When Turgenov stole Vanko’s Crimson Dynamo armor, both Turgenov and Vanko died in battle but Natasha escaped. Later, feigning repentance, she romanced Stark long enough to steal his experimental anti-gravity ray. With it, she performed several acts of sabotage against the USA until Iron Man deactivated the device. Her cover blown, she romanced and manipulated the outlaw archer Hawkeye (Clint Barton) into working with her, helping him enhance his archery arsenal with high-tech arrows. The pair attacked Iron Man, who deflected one of Hawkeye’s explosive arrows, its impact felling Natasha and ending the battle when Hawkeye rushed her to safety. While recovering, she persuaded Hawkeye to attack her superiors’ next target, Williams Innovations, but Spider-Man’s intervention drove Hawkeye away. The idealistic Hawkeye’s growing influence upon Natasha led her to rebel against her communist superiors, who extorted her into returning to action with a new costume and weapons, but she and Hawkeye again failed against Iron Man.

Hawkeye:

Clint Barton was orphaned at an early age when his parents died in a car accident and was sent to a children’s home with his brother Bernard. He and his brother ran away to join the Carson Carnival of Traveling Wonders, and the pair worked as roustabouts. While a member of the circus, Hawkeye was trained by the original Swordsman (Jacques Duquesne) and Trickshot. Clint’s life, however, would forever be changed after he stumbled onto the Swordsman counting the money he had just robbed from the carnival. The Swordsman offered Clint to become his partner in crime, but Clint rejected his mentor, sparking a fight that ended when the Swordsman left him for dead after he fell from the high wire. Barney, too, abandoned him, in disbelief that Clint passed up such an opportunity. Trickshot stepped up his role as Clint’s mentor, later asking him to join him in raiding a criminal named Marko. However, Clint severely injured one of Marko’s guards and discovered him to be his brother, Barney. Repelled by the consequences of his actions (and his mentor’s role in prompting them), he abandoned Trickshot and parted on bad terms.

His natural archery abilities honed to an expert level, Clint wandered the country, working in various carnivals or otherwise making money out of the costume and persona of “Hawkeye”. One day, when witnessing Iron Man save the lives of some people at the carnival, he decided to become a costumed crime-fighter himself. But as luck would have it, on Hawkeye’s first night on patrol, he was mistaken for a criminal by the police and hunted down.

He soon met the Black Widow, who was working at the time as a costumed villain for her country, and she easily seduced the hot-headed adventurer, making him think it was in his interest to defeat Iron Man. He attempted to do so according to her prompting on several occasions, but soon wised up, regretting his decision. Instead, he hoped to join Iron Man’s team of Avengers. As a way of proving himself, he broke into the Avengers Mansion and convinced their butler, Jarvis, to play the role of a victim so he could display his powers. Iron Man vouched for Hawkeye, and he joined the new line-up that included Captain America, the Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver.

Clint continued to be an active member of the Avengers for years, with his archery skills matching the superhuman powers of his teammates. His brash attitude initially chafed under the leadership of Captain America, and, although it took some time to come to respect him, the two have become good friends. Also at first, he felt attracted the Scarlet Witch, even to the point of having trouble getting over her eventual marriage to the Vision. For years, he also continued to hold a torch for the Black Widow, until she returned to her espionage career and told him that she had never loved him (although she said that in order to keep him away.)

IT’S FREE COMIC BOOK DAY!

YES! Those things we held in our hands as kids, full of color, dramatic story lines and mind blowing art called “Comics” have a day to call their own.

What is Free Comic Book Day? Free Comic Book Day is a single day – the first Saturday in May each year – when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely FREE* to anyone who comes into their stores. *Check with your local shop for their participation and rules.

The only reason why people across the world are flocking to theaters to see The Avengers this weekend is because… many years ago, back in 1963 there existed a comic book by the same name.

Comic books are as important to the arts as classical music, literature or paintings. And today you could argue that the only reason why Hollywood still manages to make any money is because of the stories found within these printed and bound works of art.

Comics are modern day Greek Mythology. They are older than books or even words all together. If you walk into any historical cave site today you are sure to find drawings of mass hunts or bonfires lining the inside walls. And to top it off Comics aren’t limited to words, they transcend language barriers. You could pick up a comic book printed in a different language (i.e. Manga) and still know whats going on.

Wether you’re into Sunday funnies, Graphic Novels, Manga, Comics or  Digital Comics, they all need to be appreciated by the young and old, the fanboy and the casual reader alike.

So take your kids, your girlfriend, your boyfriend, your friends, your nieces and nephews to a participating comic book shop in your area for a day of discovery (or in some cases re-discovery) of inspiring art and entertainment.

And if you’re on the fence about comics in general Free Comic Book Day is the perfect opportunity for you to dive in head first to see what it’s all about without it costing you a dime.
