FIRST APPEARANCE: Incredible Hulk #180 (1974)

ORIGIN:
Wolverine, aka Logan, was born in the late 19th century with the name James Howlett. His parents were respectable and well to do. During a break in by the ex-groundskeeper Thomas Logan and his son Dog, James saw the groundskeeper kill his father in an attempt to get his ex-love back, James’ mother. In turn, James’ mutant gene activated and his bone claws came out. He attacked and killed Thomas Logan and wounded Dog. His mother killed herself shortly afterwards.

James ran away with his longtime friend Rose, and the murders were placed falsely upon James. They escaped to British Columbia and lived there for some time, James taking the name, “Logan” to hide his identity. Unfortunately, Dog tracked them down and attacked Logan hoping to kill him. Logan defeated Dog, but in the process, accidentally killed his love, Rose. Logan ran into the wilderness and lived with the wolves for some time.

During the next hundred years, Logan wandered the countryside. He met Captain America during WW2 fighting with the Canadian army. He is thought to have been a samurai and a covert operative. Then, much later, he joined Weapon X, a project that worked to create a superhuman being. During this time, Wolverine had his bones grafted with Adamantium and had memories implanted, making much of his history unknown whether it is true or not.

He was sent to stop The Incredible Hulk, who was rampaging in the Canadian wilderness. It was then that he was approached by Proffessor Charles Xavier, head of the School for Gifted Youngsters and leader of The X-Men. Professor X was recruiting for a new team and Wolverine agreed to go with the Professor.

Wolverine has since become a major part of the X-Men team and has been a leader on more than one occasion. One of the main reasons for his staying was that he fell in love for Jean Grey, even though she married fellow X-Man Cyclops. Despite all of this, Wolverine continues to serve the X-Men as a leader and teacher to the younger generation.

POWERS/ABILITIES/SKILLS:

Wolverine has many animal like powers attributed to his mutant gene. His senses are extremely heightened, making him able to track by smell alone and detect nearby enemies. He also has bone claws that can pop out through the skin of his knuckles and are razor sharp weapons.
One of the things that allow Wolverine to do the things he does is his superhuman healing factor. Cuts, bullet wounds, broken bones and much more can be healed in a matter of minutes, if not seconds to heal him from most any injury. A side effect of this healing factor is that drugs have little affect on him (including alcohol) and that he has an unnaturally long lifespan.
When Wolverine joined the Weapon X program, an indestructible metal known as Adamantium was grafted to his skeletal structure, making his claws able to cut through just about anything and also making him even more resistant to damage.
Wolverine is also a master of many martial arts, including ninjitsu. When in times of great stress and anger, Wolverine can revert to a more animalistic stage and can go into a, “berserker rage,” not caring if he lives or dies, but unrelenting in his attacks. In contrast to his brutish nature, Wolverine is extremely knowledgeable. Due to his increased lifespan, he has traveled around the world and amassed extensive knowledge of foreign languages and cultures. He is fluent in English, Japanese, Russian, Chinese, Cheyenne, Spanish, Arabic, and Lakota; he also has some knowledge of French, Filipino, Thai, Vietnamese, German, Italian,Portuguese, Korean, Hindi, and Persian. With these powers, Wolverine is one of the most dangerous mutants alive.

ALLIES:
Wolverine has made many enemies over the years, but has made alot of allies. Among those allies, he remains close more then anyone include: Nightclawer, Colossus, Captain America, Luke Cage, Fantomex, Spiderman and Deadpool. Wolverine is frequently depicted as a gruff loner, often taking leave from the X-Men to deal with personal issues or problems. He is often irreverent and rebellious towards authority figures, though he is a reliable ally and capable leader. He has been a mentor and father figure to several younger women, especially Jubilee, Rogue, Kitty Pryde and X-23, and has had romantic relationships with numerous women (most notably Mariko Yashida, as well as a mutual, but unfulfilled attraction to Jean Grey, leading to jealous run-ins with her boyfriend (and later husband), Scott Summers. He also married Viper as part of a debt, and then later divorced her. When Squirrel Girl is hired as a nanny for the daughter of Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, Wolverine reveals that he and Squirrel Girl had a relationship at some point in the past, and she uses his given name, James, indicating she knew him at some point when he was aware of his birth name. According to Wolverine, the relationship ended with the two agreeing never to see each other again, but Squirrel Girl stated she hopes they “can be professional” during her tenure as nanny. He is most often depicted as a member of the X-Men, Alpha Flight, or later the Avengers.

ENEMIES:

Wolverine has been around for many years and has pissed off alot of people either by himself or with the X-men or Avengers and have built up quite a long list of enemies

Magneto- Once friends when Magneto was at Xavier’s Institute, after Wolverine tried to kill him, Magneto lost all sympathy for him. But, Magneto, with his mutant power to manipulate magnetic forces, proves to be a very deadly foe, as evident when he forcefully removed the adamantium that was bonded to Wolverine’s skeleton through his pores.

Daken- who is also Wolverine’s son and blames Wolverine for his mother’s death, Sabretooth- Both were experiments in the Weapon X program and it is hinted that Sabretooth knows much of Wolverine’s past in the program.

Omega Red- Wolverine first encountered Omega Red while working for the CIA. Omega Red is a Russian mutant supersoldier with carbonadium tendrils that emerge from his wrist and he also secretes a pheromone that drains the life out of his victims. He uses his tendrils as a conduit for the pheromone.

Cyber- Part man, part mutant, part machine, Cyber was one of the very rare enemies whom Wolverine feared. Cyber has even snapped off one set of Wolverine’s bone claws. But Cyber was tested by the Dark Riders (actually, they were testing his adamantium skin). Genesis released mutant Death Watch Beetles upon Cyber, and they ate away Cyber’s flesh, leaving behind his adamantium skin which Genesis tries to bond into Wolverine’s bones.

Lady Deathstrike- Daughter of the man who created the adamantium bonding process which culminated in Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton. Led to believe Wolverine was involved in stealing the process, Yuriko, in her thirst for revenge, had her body altered into a cyborg, thus giving her the ability to fight Wolverine at an equal playing field. At a confrontation she discovered that he no longer had the adamantium, and she stopped the fight, seeing that there was no honor in killing someone that was not equipped to fight her (in another words, Wolverine was adamantium-less).

Silver Samurai- Silver Samurai is a very skilled Japanese warrior who has clashed several times against Wolverine in his never-ending quest to restore his family’s honor. He accomplished this in a trade off with Wolverine: in exchange for the Honor sword in Wolverine’s possession, he agreed to provide for the welfare of Wolverine’s adopted daughter, Amiko.

TEMPLAR NOTE: Wolverine was my clear and present reason on why I loved and read Marvel Comics and the X-Men. Even after I dropped Marvel mostly now for DC Comics, I still catch myself buying and reading comics that involve Wolverine such as X-Force, and Deadpool (future character spotlight) comics. I also loved Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of the battle ridden and struggled life of Wolverine in all 3 X-Men movies and X-men Origins: Wolverine…even though the movie was not that great. Below is a collection of the Best of Wolverines from the 90’s cartoon…its awesome.

Deh-Shay! Deh-Shay! Bah-Sah-Rah! Bah-Sah-Rah!

The world famous composer, Hans Zimmer rises to the task of scoring the third and final Dark Knight film. Zimmer’s approach to the Dark Knight Rises has been called unusual by the film’s director. And if that’s any indication, this will be one hell of a soundtrack.

In an interview with MTV, Zimmer mentioned that he did go over the story arc of the film with Nolan and discussed the themes for many of the films returning and debuting characters. But insisting that he can’t say more than that. In the interview he goes on to say…

“The thing about Chris and myself is, what we try to do, is treat each one with the autonomy it deserves, to try and invent and reinvent, not just go over old ground,” he said. “I think that’s what was most exciting for people on ‘The Dark Knight.’ They knew we were doing the ‘Batman’ movie, but they had no idea it was going to be that kind of ‘Batman’ movie.”

In an other interview with Collider, while promoting Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Zimmer talked about coming up with an unorthodox idea to not only create a new sound for the 3rd film but to open the project up to the fans as well.

“Well, before I started on Sherlock, I had an idea for Dark Knight. I said to Chris [Nolan], “Would it be okay if I got the most outrageous orchestra together and tried this experimental thing?” It involved chanting and all sorts of stuff. And, if I decided that it was just complete rubbish, then we could just throw it away and nobody would ever mention that Hans went and spent all that money. So, I went off and spent weeks writing it. I recorded the piece, and Chris came by and said, “Well, you’ve done half the movie now.” I said, “Well, I don’t think that’s quite true.” But, I think I figured out my cornerstone to the thing. I’m hellishly ambitious on that. The chant became a very complicated thing because I wanted hundreds of thousands of voices, and it’s not so easy to get hundreds of thousands of voices. So, we Twittered and we posted on the internet, for people who wanted to be part of it. It seemed like an interesting thing. We’ve created this world, over these last two movies, and somehow I think the audience and the fans have been part of this world. We do keep them in mind. And I thought it would be something nice, if our audiences could actually be part of the making of the movie and be participants in this. So, we’ve got this website up, www.ujam.com, where you can go on and be part of it. It was fantastic. The first Tweet that went out just melted our server because we had tens of thousands of people a second, trying to get onto the site. You always want to create a sound that nobody has ever heard, but I think, this time, we might be doing that. As a musician, I think about what environment things are recorded in. Now, you have hundreds of thousands of voices, all recorded in their own individual environment. Up until now, that’s been impossible to do. There’s a lot of people doing a lot of editing, as well.”

When asked if he cared about online reviews and criticism, Hans said

“I read it. My character is flawed, and I read it and suffer terribly when people don’t like what I do, or misunderstand it, but I learn things from it. Every and any conversation you have about the thing that you’re most interested in – which in my case, happens to be the movies I’m working on – might not be a novel conversation, but somebody’s point of view does make me think about things. Other than the really bitter and twisted stuff, I think people, especially with The Dark Knight franchise, are very interested in us making a good movie, and they’re trying to cheer us on, and they’re trying to make suggestions that are actually helpful to us. So, I am very aware of what’s going on out there.”

Zimmer elaborated on the “chant” used for the big Bane reveal. He said

“It’s nice to have the whole world join in on a chant. My only problem is that they’re so well-behaved on the chanting right now. If anybody goes onto UJAM right now, I need a little bit more. If you want to be heard, get a little louder, get a little more aggressive. It’s not necessarily his through-line; it will be an aspect of it. Right now we’re all focusing on the chant because that’s all you guys are hearing. It’s a very small part of the score, but I think there is something wonderful about finding a way of having the people who really care for this movie be participants in this movie.”

So it’s Officially Happening, ‘Avengers 2’ is in Production!

So this is one of those things we all knew was going to happen, but we are going to write about it anyways. Disney has officially announced on Tuesday that The Avengers 2 is in production!

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the news at the beginning of a conference call with reporters, describing the success of the first film as “a great illustration of why we like Marvel so much.

Over the weekend, The Avengers broke box-office weekend records with a whooping $207 million opening, earning the second-highest single day gross of all time (after “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 2”). And that is also not including that the film has accumulated over $500 million overseas alone, bringing the grand total to about nearly $744 million. The Avengers is currently estimated to reach $1 billion by this Sunday! So yea, I believe that means there will be a sequel.

There has even been some good ol’ fashioned fan rivalry going on over the success of The Avengers and how it will do against the upcoming Batman movie ‘The Dark Knight Rises‘. The Avengers has already taken the title from the Dark Knight for being one of the fastest movies to reach 250 million opening weekend. So Batman, you have some big shoes to fill.

So far all of the original cast of The Avengers are planning to return for the sequel and even director Joss Whedon has been given a option to return to direct the film if he wants. But just in case you can’t wait that long for the return of the Avengers, Disney has already put more coal in the fire to keep your Marvel excitement nice and warm. Iron Man 3 is scheduled to hit summer of 2013 and Thor 2 will follow in the fall, and Captain America 2 is scheduled to hit theaters April 4th of 2014.

Do Black Widow or Hawkeye deserve their own Movie?

Now that “The Avengers” has hit US theaters, the question comes to light. Do you think “Black Widow” or “Hawkeye” deserve their own Stand Alone Film or maybe a “Black Widow and Hawkeye” Team-Up Flick.
Either way I wouldn’t mind watching it given that Scarlett Johansson who also I may add received a star on the “Walk of Fame” gave an Amazing performance playing the former Soviet Spy turn S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. And Major Kudos goes to Jeremy Renner who played the Master Archer and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent “Hawkeye”. In an interview with the “Washington Post”to having her stand alone film Scarlett Johansson replied: “I love her origin story. I think it’s just such a riveting one,” she said. “It’s just steeped in history and the richness to shoot in Russia, perhaps… I hope that the fans’ voice is loud enough and they want to see a Widow origin story, I know Marvel would be happy to entertain that. We’ve spoken a lot about it.”
“You see a little bit about how Natasha joined and it’s not that she’s fighting for the greater good of humanity,” the actress said. “She was almost salvaged by S.H.I.E.L.D. and so she’s loyal to that group, to that agency, but only as sort of paid debt.”
With that said, tell us what you think in the COMMENTS below on whether Black Widow or Hawkeye deserve their movie or better yet “Team Up’ movie.
To Help understand more about these two highly trained and deadly agents. I included a small bio about each character below:
Black Widow:
Born circa 1928, Natalia “Natasha” Romanova was apparently orphaned as a child when she was trapped in a burning building during an early attack on Stalingrad by enemy forces. Ivan Petrovitch Bezukhov, a Soviet soldier, found Natasha in the inferno and rescued her. Although Ivan kept a close eye on Natasha as she grew, by the late 1930s she had attracted the attention of Soviet intelligence, which began her training. In 1941, she was almost brainwashed into serving the ninja clan the Hand, but was saved by Ivan, Logan (James Howlett, later Wolverine) and Captain America. Following World War II, Natasha was recruited to become part of the Black Widow Program, a team of elite female sleeper agents. Among the Widow’s instructors was the Winter Soldier, formerly Captain America’s sidekick Bucky (James Barnes); Natasha studied as a ballerina to cover for her true occupation. The Soviet state eventually arranged for Natasha to marry Alexi Shostakov, a champion test pilot. After a few years of a happy marriage, the KGB faked Shostakov’s death in a rocket test; grief for Shostakov drove Natasha’s resolve deeper and she continued her education with the Red Room Academy, finally being appointed the title of the Black Widow.

After Russian scientist Anton Vanko left Russia to work with Iron Man (Tony Stark), Natasha’s superiors sent her and another operative, Boris Turgenov, to assassinate both men. When Turgenov stole Vanko’s Crimson Dynamo armor, both Turgenov and Vanko died in battle but Natasha escaped. Later, feigning repentance, she romanced Stark long enough to steal his experimental anti-gravity ray. With it, she performed several acts of sabotage against the USA until Iron Man deactivated the device. Her cover blown, she romanced and manipulated the outlaw archer Hawkeye (Clint Barton) into working with her, helping him enhance his archery arsenal with high-tech arrows. The pair attacked Iron Man, who deflected one of Hawkeye’s explosive arrows, its impact felling Natasha and ending the battle when Hawkeye rushed her to safety. While recovering, she persuaded Hawkeye to attack her superiors’ next target, Williams Innovations, but Spider-Man’s intervention drove Hawkeye away. The idealistic Hawkeye’s growing influence upon Natasha led her to rebel against her communist superiors, who extorted her into returning to action with a new costume and weapons, but she and Hawkeye again failed against Iron Man.

Hawkeye:

Clint Barton was orphaned at an early age when his parents died in a car accident and was sent to a children’s home with his brother Bernard. He and his brother ran away to join the Carson Carnival of Traveling Wonders, and the pair worked as roustabouts. While a member of the circus, Hawkeye was trained by the original Swordsman (Jacques Duquesne) and Trickshot. Clint’s life, however, would forever be changed after he stumbled onto the Swordsman counting the money he had just robbed from the carnival. The Swordsman offered Clint to become his partner in crime, but Clint rejected his mentor, sparking a fight that ended when the Swordsman left him for dead after he fell from the high wire. Barney, too, abandoned him, in disbelief that Clint passed up such an opportunity. Trickshot stepped up his role as Clint’s mentor, later asking him to join him in raiding a criminal named Marko. However, Clint severely injured one of Marko’s guards and discovered him to be his brother, Barney. Repelled by the consequences of his actions (and his mentor’s role in prompting them), he abandoned Trickshot and parted on bad terms.

His natural archery abilities honed to an expert level, Clint wandered the country, working in various carnivals or otherwise making money out of the costume and persona of “Hawkeye”. One day, when witnessing Iron Man save the lives of some people at the carnival, he decided to become a costumed crime-fighter himself. But as luck would have it, on Hawkeye’s first night on patrol, he was mistaken for a criminal by the police and hunted down.

He soon met the Black Widow, who was working at the time as a costumed villain for her country, and she easily seduced the hot-headed adventurer, making him think it was in his interest to defeat Iron Man. He attempted to do so according to her prompting on several occasions, but soon wised up, regretting his decision. Instead, he hoped to join Iron Man’s team of Avengers. As a way of proving himself, he broke into the Avengers Mansion and convinced their butler, Jarvis, to play the role of a victim so he could display his powers. Iron Man vouched for Hawkeye, and he joined the new line-up that included Captain America, the Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver.

Clint continued to be an active member of the Avengers for years, with his archery skills matching the superhuman powers of his teammates. His brash attitude initially chafed under the leadership of Captain America, and, although it took some time to come to respect him, the two have become good friends. Also at first, he felt attracted the Scarlet Witch, even to the point of having trouble getting over her eventual marriage to the Vision. For years, he also continued to hold a torch for the Black Widow, until she returned to her espionage career and told him that she had never loved him (although she said that in order to keep him away.)

IT’S FREE COMIC BOOK DAY!

YES! Those things we held in our hands as kids, full of color, dramatic story lines and mind blowing art called “Comics” have a day to call their own.

What is Free Comic Book Day? Free Comic Book Day is a single day – the first Saturday in May each year – when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely FREE* to anyone who comes into their stores. *Check with your local shop for their participation and rules.

The only reason why people across the world are flocking to theaters to see The Avengers this weekend is because… many years ago, back in 1963 there existed a comic book by the same name.

Comic books are as important to the arts as classical music, literature or paintings. And today you could argue that the only reason why Hollywood still manages to make any money is because of the stories found within these printed and bound works of art.

Comics are modern day Greek Mythology. They are older than books or even words all together. If you walk into any historical cave site today you are sure to find drawings of mass hunts or bonfires lining the inside walls. And to top it off Comics aren’t limited to words, they transcend language barriers. You could pick up a comic book printed in a different language (i.e. Manga) and still know whats going on.

Wether you’re into Sunday funnies, Graphic Novels, Manga, Comics or  Digital Comics, they all need to be appreciated by the young and old, the fanboy and the casual reader alike.

So take your kids, your girlfriend, your boyfriend, your friends, your nieces and nephews to a participating comic book shop in your area for a day of discovery (or in some cases re-discovery) of inspiring art and entertainment.

And if you’re on the fence about comics in general Free Comic Book Day is the perfect opportunity for you to dive in head first to see what it’s all about without it costing you a dime.
